A Dorset car park is set to be sold and used for affordable housing, a council has said.

East Dorset District Council is due to make an estimated £220,000 from the sale of Old Road car park, in Wimborne, which has 43 spaces.

The council said the car park was "under used" following 119 inspections.

It said there were only eight occasions, during the survey, when nearby car parks would have been unable to accommodate cars from Old Road.

According to the council, the site has been earmarked for development since 2002 and an extra 215 car parking spaces had been provided in the town since then at Rowlands Hill car park.

The development, which will be carried out by Raglan Housing Association, is subject to planning permission.

Councillor Alex Clarke, chairman of the council's resources committee, said increasing the provision of affordable housing was a "top priority" for the council.
