Bournemouth and Poole music hub receives £1m grant

All young people in Bournemouth and Poole will be able to learn a musical instrument following a £1m funding boost, the local councils have said.

A new music hub has received £850,000 from the Arts Council and £160,000 from Youth Music.

The agency SoundStorm, on behalf of Bournemouth and Poole councils, intends to teach children in and out of school.

Anne Newton, director of children's services at Borough of Poole, said it meant "marvellous opportunities".

The project is targeting young people aged between five and 18, with the possibility to play as part of an ensemble or choir "across a wide range of musical genres".

Funds will also assist schools to increase their music offer through improved training and resources.

Dan Somogyi, SoundStorm music education co-ordinator, said: "These grants will secure the future of music education across the conurbation until 2015."
