Durlston Castle opens as Jurassic Coast visitor centre

Help

Durlston Castle on Dorset's Jurassic Coast has been given a £5m facelift and has reopened as a visitor centre.

The "castle", near Swanage, was built at the end of the 19th century as the centrepiece of a planned housing estate by developer George Burt.

Restoration work started in May 2010 with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund contribution.

As part of the project, the 40-tonne stone Great Globe, has also been restored.
