A £3.5m scheme to turn a disused railway bridge into a walking and cycling route gets under way later.

Laira Bridge in Plymouth has fallen into disrepair since it was last used in the 1980s.

Restoration has been funded by the government's local sustainable transport fund.

The bridge will complete an almost continuous off-road cycle route between Devonport in the west of Plymouth to Plymstock and Plympton in the east.

The new bridge link is expected to open in 2015.
