'Brazen' burglar thwarted by 94-year-old Newton Abbot woman

A "brazen" burglar left empty-handed from a house after being challenged by its 94-year-old owner.

The woman had been asleep in a chair and woke at about 02:00 BST on 2 April to find the man searching a room in the property.

She challenged him and he left the house in Newton Abbot, Devon, without taking anything.

Devon and Cornwall Police praised her "tremendous" actions and appealed for witnesses to assist their inquiries.

Det Cons David Piper said: "This was a brazen burglary attempted while the elderly resident was at home.

"She showed tremendous courage by challenging him and he has left the house without anything as a result."

The man is described as white, aged about 30, more than 6ft (1.8m) tall and of a large build.

He was wearing a dark tracksuit with coloured trims around the collar.
