An appeal fund for a memorial for former Labour leader Michael Foot in Plymouth has raised more than £15,000.

Mr Foot, who died aged 96 three years ago, was born and raised in the city and was the MP for Plymouth Devonport from 1945 until 1955.

An anonymous donation of £5,000 was made by someone who said he had been "inspired" by Mr Foot in his youth.

A carved granite bench will be erected in Freedom Fields Park near Mr Foot's first home at Lipson Terrace.

The park was the scene of many of the politician's public speeches.

The bench, which will cost about £22,000, should be in place by the end of the year.

Peter Jones, chairman of the appeal committee, said reading was one of Mr Foot's passions and it was hoped his memorial bench would "inspire many people to spend some time reading, or merely reflecting as they gaze out to sea".
