Three university students were among five men who appeared in court earlier charged with kidnapping a 23-year-old man in Exeter.

The alleged abduction happened at about 12:30 BST on Monday.

Exeter Magistrates Court heard Steven Miller was found bound and injured in woodland about 3.5 miles (5.21 km) from the city.

The defendants were remanded in custody to appear at Exeter Crown Court on 15 August.

William Pugh, 22, from Exeter and Claudio Diko, 19, and Cedric Lushima, 18, both of Lebus Street, London, are all students at London Metropolitan University.

The two other defendants: George Watts, 21, of Ladysmith Lane, Heavertree and William Pugh, 22, are both from Exeter.

The court heard Mr Miller was taken to hospital after being found at Huxham Brake, near Stoke Woods.

He was given treatment for a head wound.
