A Devon ferry service which had its reopening delayed after slipway repair work fell behind schedule is to restart on 21 May, a council says.

The Dartmouth Lower Ferry transports vehicles and foot passengers between Dartmouth and Kingswear.

It has been out of service since January when a £1m refurbishment project began.

South Hams District Council said "unforeseen circumstances" had resulted in the delayed reopening.

It had been expected to reopen on 29 March, and then at the end of April.

South Hams Council said difficult ground conditions, underwater obstructions and the delay of materials had caused problems for the scheme.

The crossing is believed back to the 1360s.
