A seaside town centre in Devon is to be given a £1.5m facelift.

Footpaths outside the shops at Dawlish's Strand will be widened and repaved in natural stone.

There will also be new parking bays, new benches and a concrete shelter near the town's bowling green will be taken down.

The scheme, which is a joint initiative between Devon County, Teignbridge District and Dawlish Town Councils, has been welcomed by the town's traders.

'Use us or lose us'

The road around the Dawlish Strand will be reconstructed as part of the work.

In addition, Teignbridge District Council and Dawlish Town Council will be re-grading the bank between The Strand and the Lawn.

The scheme has also been co-ordinated to enable BT Open Reach, Wales and West Utilities, Western Power Distribution and South West Water to carry out work at the same time.

David Force, Chairman of the Dawlish Chamber of Trade, said: "We see this as a terrific opportunity to reverse the decline we have seen in recent times.

"We need the support and goodwill of the townsfolk to help make this work. It really is a case of 'Use us or lose us'. You will be sorry when we're gone."

Councillor Pauline Bloomfield, the Mayor of Dawlish, said: "The public have been actively involved in reaching the final design for these improvements.

"We are now eagerly looking forward to seeing the work start and real changes appear in our town that will bring renewed interest by tourists and regular visitors."
