Buckfastleigh ram-raid office due to reopen

A Devon post office is due to reopen on Monday, nearly three months after it was badly damaged in a ram-raid.

Raiders in a stolen Land Rover smashed the wall of Buckfastleigh post office on 3 July and attached a wire rope round the cash machine before towing it on to the road.

They fled empty-handed after failing to load the ATM on to the vehicle. No-one has been prosecuted for the offence.

It has cost £40,000 to repair the post office.

'Very supportive'

Beverly Garland, the owner and subpostmaster, said: "We lost half the shopfront, it looked like it had been hit with a bomb.

"The wall had been ripped out and the windows were smashed and left all over the street."

She said that dealing with contractors and insurers to repair the Grade II-listed building had been "a lot of stress".

"But everyone has been very helpful and supportive," she added.

"We are the only bank in the town and the town has been a lot quieter because other businesses have been affected by us not opening.

"I'm absolutely delighted that we are finally near the end and looking forward to welcoming back all our customers."
