Devon greyhound world record bid fails

An attempt to break the world record for the number of dogs of the same breed together at one time has failed in Devon.

The Greyhound Sanctuary hoped to bring together 1,000 dogs at Escot Park but only 300 were registered to take part.

Their attempt fell 400 dogs short of the current Guinness World Record of 700 Labradors, which was set in Poland in 2010.

Organisers said despite missing the record, "it was quite a sight".

Sally Slater, from the Greyhound Sanctuary charity, said people from across the country, including Norfolk and Wales, had travelled to east Devon to take part.

She said: "Despite not breaking the record there's a big crowd. It would have been nice to break the record, but we might have another go next year."

To break the record the dogs had to be registered and complete a three-mile (5km) walk around the park.

Neil Holohan, who travelled from Wolverhampton to take part with two of his greyhounds, said: "It's great to be amongst so many wonderful dogs, and no-one is misbehaving.

"They're enjoying it, there are lots of smells and lots of pointy noises - they like being amongst the other greyhounds."
