Torquay crash: Inquest opens into deaths

Marek Wojiechowski was arrested but died later in hospital

An inquest into the deaths of a baby and 26-year-old man who died in a head-on road crash in Torquay has been opened and adjourned in Plymouth.

Marek Wojiechowski was driving a Vauxhall Vectra which collided with a Volkswagen Golf on 6 July.

The Golf was carrying the Twomey family, who were on holiday from the Irish Republic.

Oisin Twomey, aged 16-months, died in the crash. An unborn child who was to be named Elber Marie, also died.

Con, 39, and Elber Twomey, 36, from Meelin, County Cork, remain in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Plymouth.

Mr Wojiechowski, who was originally from Poland but who lived in the area with his wife and family, was arrested at the scene in Hamelin Way, but later died.

Twenty-five emergency service vehicles attended the incident, along with three air ambulances which helped to take them to hospital.

The road was closed for more than 10 hours while the vehicles were recovered and forensic examinations took place.
