Ambitious plans to build a new ice rink and expand a concert venue could create more than 1,000 jobs in Plymouth.

Plymouth Argyle Football Club owner James Brent is behind the £83m scheme, which he said aims to provide the city with facilities which "compete on the national stage".

His company, Akkeron Leisure Limited, is Plymouth City Council's preferred bidder to revamp the Pavilions.

The plans also include a new ice rink at Home Park, near the new Life Centre.

The council's cabinet will be asked to approve Akkeron as the preferred bidder to remodel the Pavilions arena through its subsidiary, Five Directions Limited (FDL).

If approved, the concert arena at the Pavilions would be upgraded and its capacity increased, the exterior of the building reclad and a new entrance foyer created. Shops and residential housing would also form part of the site.

Mr Brent said his plans should create about 800 construction jobs, with a further 550 jobs when the facilities have been completed.

Pavilions ice rink James Brent said the new international-size ice arena would be "very different" to the Pavilions rink

"The vision is really to see Plymouth as the sporting and leisure centre of excellence in the South West and providing facilities which compete on the national stage," he told BBC News.

Mr Brent said the new ice facility at Home Park would be of international size and "very different" to the "kidney-shaped" rink at the Pavilions.

He said it would be "very sensible" to create a sporting hub for the South West, with the football stadium, ice arena and life centre.

The council has been looking for a private sector partner to take over the Pavilions site for more than a year.

It said the site's £1.5m operational costs "cannot be sustained in the current financial climate".

Mr Brent's bid will be discussed by the council next week.
