Devon misconduct policeman accused of punching man

A Devon and Cornwall police officer has appeared in court charged with misconduct.

David Veale, of Brixington Lane, Exmouth, is accused of punching a man before and after arresting him during an incident in Exeter in November 2009.

The 51-year-old police constable from Heavitree Road police station is also accused of trying to smother the man by covering his face with a hat.

He denied the misconduct charge at Taunton Crown Court.

The court was told the incident took place on Bonfire Night - 5 November - 2009.

Devon and Cornwall Police said Pc Veale had been suspended from duty after the incident.

The trial continues.
