A man who tried to rescue his dog has been saved by a lifeboat crew after he became stranded on rocks in Devon.

Brixham Coastguard coordinated the rescue near Hope's Nose, Torquay at 1320 BST on Monday.

The local man was walking with his family when his Jack Russell terrier slipped and fell from cliffs.

Torbay coastguard team and the RNLI inshore lifeboat rescued the man and his pet from the narrow cove. Neither were seriously hurt.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesmen said the dog's owner, who sustained considerable scratching from brambles on the cliff side, was given safety advice by coastguards.

"We don't advise people to go over cliffs to rescue their pets unless they're sure they can get back up," he said.
