Firefighters rescued rabbits, tortoises and budgies from a pet shop when they were endangered by smoke from a nearby fire.

They revived one budgie by giving it oxygen, but four budgies died despite the efforts of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire broke out at a woodyard in Long Eaton.

Six fire crews were called to Acton Business Park at about 20:45 BST on Friday to deal with the large fire.

The fire is thought to have been started by an overheated fridge, before spreading and setting alight to a large amount of wood.

    North Wingfield fire 08:10:

There was a "missed opportunity" to raise the alarm during a house fire which killed two women and two children in North Wingfield, a coroner has said.

Tyler Green, 9, and Jordan Green, 12

Josie Leighton, 32, her two sons Tyler Green, nine, and Jordan Green, 12, and Claire James, 27, died in the fire in 2013.

The inquest was told a neighbour heard a smoke alarm and went back to sleep.

But the coroner said there was nothing to suggest raising an early alarm would have made a "material difference" and concluded the deaths were accidental.
