A former Derby chemical factory which once employed 20,000 people could be demolished if plans are approved.

A planning application has been submitted to demolish most of the Celanese Acetate Ltd site, on Holme Lane, in Spondon, which closed in 2012.

A local councillor said once decontaminated the site could be developed for new homes and businesses.

The site, dating back to 1916, was established to develop cellulose acetate for the use in World War One.

Chris Poulter, Conservative councillor for Spondon, said it was positive that such an "important and significant" industrial site was available for redevelopment.

"I'm very hopeful that the site can be cleaned to the standard that would allow domestic housing as well as some potential commercial development... creating jobs from construction work and businesses."
