Edward Street, Derby The fire broke out in a basement flat on Edward Street, Derby

A man has died in a fire at a block of flats in Derby.

The blaze broke out in a basement flat in Edward Street at about 23:15 GMT on Thursday.

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said the body of a 64-year-old man was found inside the property.

She said an investigation had been launched with the fire service but added that the cause of the fire was not thought to be suspicious.

Onlookers said neighbours tried to force windows and doors open in an attempt to save the man inside the flat.

Guthrie Whitby said: "One resident described to me how a brave neighbour had kicked a back door down to try and rescue the victim but was forced back by clouds of thick smoke."

No-one else in the block of flats was hurt.
