Derbyshire police hoax calls prompt arrests

Two people have been arrested following a series of hoax calls to Derbyshire police last month.

A 20-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl from the Osmaston area of Derby were arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

They have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Officers said last year they recorded a total of 441 bogus calls which had to be investigated, resulting in 796 police hours being wasted.

Insp Kam Bria said: "Every time someone misuses 999 they are potentially putting other people's lives at risk as it could impact on how quickly other emergency calls are answered and dealt with.

"We have the capability to track these calls through sophisticated methods and most often identify the perpetrators."
