Pingle School Swadlincote head suspended

The head of a struggling Derbyshire secondary school has been suspended.

Bryan Carr had already told staff and governors at The Pingle School in Swadlincote he intended to leave at the end of the summer term.

The education authority, Derbyshire County Council, confirmed the move and an investigation but said it would be "unfair to comment further".

Mr Carr took up the role in September 2011 but the school was rated as "inadequate" by Ofsted in June 2012.

Pupil blaze

It was given a deadline of May to make progress. A new inspection took place last week.

Acting head teacher Vivien Sharples, previously one of its deputy head teachers, said: "Mr Carr told us last Monday he intended to leave for personal reasons.

"Mr Carr has not been in the school since Monday and we understand the suspension to have been a neutral act pending an investigation."

The 2012 report said Pingle School, which has more than 1,200 pupils, required "significant improvement", adding while teaching was improving, it still had "weaknesses in too many lessons".

Ofsted inspectors also noted that according to school records, pupil behaviour had improved "significantly" since the previous September.

In April 2012, two 15-year-olds from the school were reprimanded by police after being caught in possession of drugs and offensive weapons.

In December 2005, 14 classrooms and two science labs were destroyed in a fire started by a pupil who was playing with a lighter and an aerosol.
