The owners of a Peak District hotel who left a wedding couple without a venue have started the process of putting the business into liquidation.

Insolvency firm Begbies Traynor confirmed it would be advising Thomas Day, director of the Izaak Walton Hotel, near Dovedale, on the move.

Geoff Cooksey and Sara Smith were due to get married there but were forced to find an alternative venue.

Several more couples also have weddings booked in the coming months.

A meeting with shareholders and creditors is due to take place on 17 May.

Mr Cooksey, 54, and Ms Smith, 46, from Rodsley, Derbyshire, were married on Saturday, at Callow Hall in nearby Ashbourne, which offered to host the wedding and a drinks reception at short notice.

Mr Cooksey said it had been an "emotional nightmare".

Mr Day was unavailable for comment.
