IPCC to probe David Stokes arrest death in Derbyshire

A police watchdog is investigating the death of a 31-year-old Birmingham man who died shortly after being arrested.

David Stokes was in a car travelling towards Chesterfield on 19 April when he was stopped by Derbyshire Police.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said he was taken unwell on the way to a police station and died a short time later at Royal Chesterfield Hospital.

The IPCC wants to speak to anyone who saw the arrest.

CCTV footage

The car was stopped on the A617 close to the junction of Calow Lane, Cock Alley and Hallflash Lane "as part of a pre-planned operation", an IPCC spokesman said.

The police van that Mr Stokes was travelling in has been seized for a forensic examination to be carried out.

CCTV footage from other police vehicles has also been obtained.

A post-mortem examination was done but a cause of death was not established and further tests are being carried out.

The IPCC has met with members of Mr Stokes' family and a further meeting with them is being arranged.
