A Derby infant school has been evacuated after a smoke grenade was discovered in the school car park, Derbyshire Police said.

Children at Somercotes Infant School in Victoria Street, Somercotes, were moved to a different part of the school while an army bomb disposal unit carried out a search.

Pupils returned to their classrooms after the unit disposed of the grenade.

Part of Victoria Street was closed during the search, police said.

Sarah Sisson, head teacher, said: "We called the police and instigated our critical incident plan.

"We evacuated all the children from the Victoria Street site to the Nottingham Road site and the police supported us in removing the device from the premises."
