Water shortage after pipe bursts in Derbyshire

Engineers work to repair a burst water pipe in Derbyshire near a Severn Trent reservoir.

A burst water main has closed five Derbyshire schools and left hundreds of homes without water.

Homes in Ripley, Swanwick, Belper, Alfreton and Somercotes were affected, a Severn Trent spokesman said.

Water supplies were expected to be restored to most homes by early Friday afternoon.

Severn Trent spokesman Rick Newton said: "The burst water main was just off the A610 and we have been working on it since 04:00 this morning."

He said some customers were being helped with deliveries of bottled water.

Schools closed as a result of the water problems were Ironville and Codnor Park Primary School, in Ironville, Swanwick Primary School and Swanwick Hall School, in Swanwick, and Millhill School and Waingroves Primary, in Ripley.

Engineers were sent to repair the burst pipe near a service reservoir.
