Heavy rain has caused a steam rally which raises money for charity to be cancelled for the first time in its 35-year history.

The Elvaston Steam Rally, which was set to feature dancing diggers, normally attracts between 10,000 and 12,000 visitors.

However the ground is waterlogged at Elvaston Castle, where the event was due to be held on 7 and 8 July.

The event in Derbyshire attracts exhibitors from across the country.

Organiser Cliff Rodgers said the cancellation was disappointing, but the ground could have been damaged if the event went ahead.

"The fact the machinery is so heavy, to start pulling it around on this sort of ground is not feasible," he said.

Not insured

"The showground belongs to Derbyshire County Council so if we damage it we are responsible."

This year's event would also have commemorated the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

In the past the event has raised money for local charities including Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Last year's raised almost £6,000.

The organisers are not insured for bad weather, but they hope to get some of their expenses back.
