Man killed in Derby with hammer 'was in wrong place'

A man who died after being attacked in the street by a gang using a hammer may have been "in the wrong place at the wrong time", a court has heard.

Serioza Lawskoski, 29, suffered serious head injuries in the assault, in Normanton, Derby, last April.

He was targeted by the masked group as he walked home from a friend's house.

Six men from Derby deny murder and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm with intent, at Nottingham Crown Court.

Kicked in head

The court heard Mr Lawskoski, who came from Poland, was confronted by the gang shortly after leaving his friend's house in Cummings Street on the evening of 23 April.

Prosecutors said he was asked "What are you looking at?" before being hit with a hammer and then kicked in the head several times as he lay on the ground.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Imran Rashid, 29, of Madeley Street, Raja Jeelani, 26, of Depot Street, Robuel Islam, 25, of Loudon Street, and brothers Kamran, Usman and Rizwan Ahmed, aged 21, 19 and 23, of Northumberland Street, deny all charges.
