Bombardier bids for £1bn Crossrail contract

Derby-based trainmaker Bombardier is bidding for a £1bn contract to supply 60 trains for an east-west link across central London.

The company is up against Siemens, Hitachi of Japan and CAF from Spain for the Crossrail contract.

It comes after controversy over the Department for Transport's decision to award the £1.4bn Thameslink contract to German firm Siemens in 2011.

The government said it would prioritise bids for the Crossrail project to firms that "benefit Britain".
