Draka factory in Derby to shut with 200 job losses
A Derby factory which produces industrial cables is to close with the loss of 200 jobs.
Workers at Draka, on Alfreton Road, have been told the plant will shut by the end of the year as its parent company reorganises its UK operations.
The company said it hoped some staff could move to new positions at its factories in Hampshire and Wales.
Italian owner Prysmian said it would also be closing a distribution centre in Rugby, Warwickshire.
In a statement, Prysmian said: "We very much regret that this proposal is necessary. However the company believes this action is essential in order to protect and sustain the future of our UK business."
Industrial cables have been produced at the Draka factory in Derby since 1929.
Unite's Annmarie Kilcline said: "It's been here for 85 years and we need to have discussions on it because it's doing pretty well.
"They've got a good workforce here and we need to ensure we keep the work in the East Midlands.
