The first performance of a new festive show at Derby Theatre has been cancelled due to safety concerns about the stage.

The Wind in the Willows was due to open for a preview on Saturday night, but theatre managers said it has been called off.

Anyone with tickets will be offered tickets for another performance.

The opening night on 29 November will definitely go ahead, theatre spokesman Heidi McKenzie said.

She said staff at the theatre were "working though the night" to fix the stage, but the repairs would not be completed in time to allow sufficient rehearsal time before the first performance.

Director Peter Ireson said: "Although we will pull out all the stops to rectify the issues with the stage we cannot risk the safety of the cast and crew, particularly children who are performing in the show."
