The family of a girl left with horrific facial injuries when a bottle was hurled through a car window has welcomed a jail sentence for the man who threw it.

Matthew McCrea, 24, of Tyne Vale, Stanley, was jailed by Durham Crown Court for eight months after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

McCrea admitted throwing a glass bottle which smashed through a car windshield and hit nine-year-old Abbie Keers in the face in Stanley on 14 February.

Abbie's grandmother said McCrea was a "thoughtless, mindless individual".
