A man has been cautioned over racist tweets sent to a Carlisle United player who killed two people in a car crash.

The tweets targeted former England youth team captain Courtney Meppen-Walter, 19, and his family.

Sent on 12 February, they hit out at the length of a prison term he served following the crash in Manchester.

Cumbria Police said officers traced the messages to a 22-year-old man from the Lincolnshire area, who had now received a caution.

In February of last year Meppen-Walter was sentenced to 16 months in prison for for causing the deaths by careless driving of Kulwant Singh, 32, and 37-year-old Ravel Kaur.

'Sensitive matter'

Mr Singh and Mrs Kaur were in a Nissan Micra struck by Meppen-Walter's Mercedes C220 saloon in September 2012.

He was driving at 55mph in a 30mph zone.

The former captain of the England under-18s squad, who admitted causing death by careless driving, was released after serving eight months behind bars.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "We will not tolerate any such comments on social media platforms and will actively investigate any such behaviour.

"Just because something is published online or on social media does not mean it is treated any less seriously as if it were said to a person's face."

A spokesman for the League Two club said: "This was a serious and sensitive matter.

"Hopefully, it will serve as a warning and a reminder that people have to act responsibly when using online forums and social media."
