Wigton crash death man named as Charles Axten, 92

A 92-year-old car driver, who was killed on Thursday in a crash with a lorry in Cumbria, has been named as Charles Axten.

The crash happened on the B5305 junction at Syke Road in Wigton, at about 12:00 BST.

Mr Axten, from the Silloth area, died at the scene, police said.

The driver of the lorry, a 43-year-old man from the Carlisle area, suffered minor injuries. The road was closed for several hours.

In a statement, Mr Axten's family said: "It is with the deepest sadness that Charles has been so suddenly taken from us."

Mr Axten, originally from Essex, was a former flight engineer in the Royal Air Force, who went on to work on civilian aeroplanes.
