A body found in a river in Cumbria has been confirmed as that of missing man John Allen.

The 76-year-old, from Preston, was last seen entering the Ravenglass estuary at about 09:00 BST on 28 April.

Police said they are not treating his death as suspicious. It is thought he may have gone into the water after his pet dog got into difficulties.

The body was found in the river at Muncaster, Ravenglass, at 12:50 BST on Thursday.

An extensive land and underwater search was carried out by police, coastguard and mountain rescue teams.

Mr Allen had been described as "a keen, capable, mountain walker" by his family.
