Barrow's Cavendish Street night closure 'a success'

Cavendish Street The closure comes into effect on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights

A move to shut a street to protect late-night revellers from traffic has been hailed a success by police

Cavendish Street in Barrow-in-Furness is now shut to all vehicles on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 21:00 BST.

An increase in the number of bars and clubs in the area had led to concerns about pedestrian safety.

Cumbria Police said the move, which began on 17 April, had created a "positive atmosphere", and the street was safer for the public.

Sgt John McIntosh described it a a measure which was "long overdue".

He said: "The closure has already experienced a bank holiday weekend where we expect to see an increase of people in the town's bars and clubs.

"Although it is early days in its implementation, we as a force are pleased with the positive atmosphere that has been created with the added level of safety."
