Night-time closure for Barrow's Cavendish Street introduced

Traffic will be banned from one of Barrow town centre's busiest roads on weekend nights to protect revellers.

Cavendish Street will be closed to all vehicles on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays - and nights before bank holidays - from 22:30 until 05:00.

Councillors said safety had become an issue as the number of bars and clubs on the street had increased.

The area has been described as "an accident waiting to happen" by a local taxi driver.

Signs will signal the closure of the road from the junction of Cavendish Street and Dalkeith Street up to Dalton Road.

'Well overdue'

Councillor Bill McEwan, vice-chairman of Cumbria County Council's Barrow Local Committee, said: "The council has been working closely with the police to implement an experimental order for a weekend night-time road closure on part of Cavendish Street.

"We will welcome feedback from residents and businesses on the closure before the local committee decides whether to make the traffic order permanent."

Taxi driver Mark Richardson told BBC Radio Cumbria earlier he welcomed the scheme, which is due to "go live" later.

He said: "It's well overdue. It's a very narrow street and it's been an accident waiting to happen for years.

"There's so many taxis flying up and down and police vans trying to contain trouble.

"It's amazing nobody has been hurt.

"I think it will be better in the long term for pedestrians and us."
