A £925,000 project to replace 8.5km (5.49 miles) of ageing metal gas mains in a Cumbrian town is set to begin.

Northern Gas Networks will start installing plastic piping in Workington from Monday and the scheme is expected to take three months to complete.

The company said the "essential work", which will commence on Cockfield Drive, will ensure the safe and reliable supply of gas to people in the area.

Shops and business will remain open as usual.
