Seven bailed over stabbing at Carlisle new year party

Seven men arrested over the stabbing of a man at a new year party in Carlisle have been released on bail.

The 23-year-old victim, who has not been named, was treated at an address in the city's Raffles Avenue, shortly after 04:00 GMT on Wednesday.

He remains in a stable condition at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

An eighth man who was also arrested in connection with the incident has been released with no further action.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Seven men from Carlisle, aged between 19 and 59, and one man from Wigton aged 24, were arrested on the day.

"Seven have been released on police bail until 12 February, while the police investigation continues."

He added that police were appealing for anyone who was at the party "or who may have any relevant information" to come forward.
