Man stabbed at Carlisle new year party critically ill

A man who was stabbed at a new year party is critically ill in hospital, police said.

The 23-year-old man was treated at an address in Raffles Avenue, Carlisle, shortly after 04:00 GMT on Wednesday.

He was taken to hospital in Carlisle, before being transferred to Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Cumbria Police said eight men, aged between 23 and 59, had been arrested and remained in custody.

Det Supt Mike Forrester said: "This is an extremely difficult investigation due to the number of people involved and due to the lack of information forthcoming.

"A man is fighting for his life and I would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to us in confidence."
