Operation to combat livestock theft begins in Cumbria

An operation to combat the stealing of livestock in Cumbria has begun after a number of thefts in the area.

Cumbria Police said livestock had been stolen across Allerdale recently.

The force is encouraging farmers to regularly check stock, keep gates and fences in good repair and use ear tags and horn brands.

A spokesman said the financial impact was "often hard to recover from when many are small businesses facing financial pressures".

"Livestock theft has a significant impact on farmers," he said.

"Losing stock they have reared and cared for is upsetting."
