Rail services between Carlisle and West Cumbria have been cancelled after a section of track was blocked by a landslip following heavy rain.

Northern Rail said services between Carlisle and Whitehaven would face disruption until Monday because of the slip at Harrington, near Workington.

Cumbria Fire Service received about 100 calls on Saturday due to flooding.

A house near Cockermouth also caught fire after being struck by lightning during the storm. No-one was hurt.

The heavy rain caused localised flooding which resulted in a number of properties in the Aspatria and Whitehaven areas being damaged.

Standing water warning

Parts of Rickerby Park in Carlisle were also flooded after the River Eden burst its banks.

A flood warning remains in force for the Keswick area.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said: "Owing to flooding between Whitehaven and Carlisle the line is blocked.

"The line will remain closed between Whitehaven and Workington while work to repair the landslip takes place.

"Customers should make inquiries before attempting to travel."

Cumbria Police warned motorists, especially in the west of the county, to be wary of standing water.

Forecasters said another storm approaching the west of the UK on Monday could cause further disruption.
