A fire which destroyed a furniture shop in Carlisle may have been started deliberately, initial findings have suggested.

The blaze, at Harveys on Crown Street, began just after 01:00 GMT, and led to a number of city centre road closures.

At its height seven appliances were in attendance, and fire crews remain at the scene, damping down.

It is thought to have begun in two industrial wheelie bins outside the store. An investigation is under way.

Justin Robinson from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was so intense the roof collapsed.

"Being a steel roof, it just fell on top of everything else that's on fire," he said.

"So the problem we've got is trying to apply the water to the area that is still burning."
