Swimmer dies after Coniston Water rescue

A man has died after getting into difficulties while swimming in Cumbria.

The 21-year-old, from Essex, was rescued from Coniston Water on Sunday afternoon by members of the public when he was seen "in distress", Cumbria Police said.

He was then taken by air ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital, where he later died.

Police said the man was swimming with a group of friends who helped in the rescue effort.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and details have been passed to the coroner for the South Lakeland area.
