Pensioner dies following car crash on A596 bypass

A man in his 80s has died after a crash on the A596 in Cumbria.

He was driving a Ford Fiesta which collided with a Volvo heavy goods vehicle on the A596 bypass between Thursby and Wigton at about 10:45 BST.

The man, believed to be from Thursby, was airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious head injuries where he later died.

The driver of the heavy goods vehicle, a man aged in his 60s from Silloth, was uninjured.

Cumbria Police are now working to formally identify the driver of the Fiesta and inform his immediate family.
