A man who admitted sexually assaulting a child almost 50 years ago in Cumbria has been jailed for four years.

George Hughes, 71, of Blake Street, Barrow-in-Furness pleaded guilty in February to three indecent assaults between 1964 and 1966.

The boy was nine at the time of the first assault at the Earnse Bay Caravan Park in Walney, now known as West Shore Park.

Now in his 50s, he reported the assaults to police last year.

Det Con Sarah McArthur said: "This has been a lengthy, difficult and harrowing time for the victim.

"I have had nothing but total admiration for him having the courage to come forward and tell us about these horrific incidents that happened such a long time ago."
