A man described as the "godfather" of a drugs operation in Cumbria and the north of England has been jailed.

Aaron Giacopazzi of Raffles Avenue, Carlisle, was jailed for 16 years after police uncovered a drugs ring operating across four counties in 2012.

Eight others from Carlisle, Bradford, Blackburn and Billingham, were also sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court.

Cocaine with a street value of more than £500,000 was recovered from one of the men.

Operation Chamonix also found one of the defendants with a shoe box in his vehicle which contained £43,000 in cash, believed to be payment or part payment for the cocaine police recovered.

In court, Judge Peter Hughes described Giacopazzi as the "godfather of the operation".
