Tributes paid to M6 crash driver Alan Walmsley

The family of Alan Walmsley said he "saw the best in everyone".

The family of a lorry driver killed in an eight-vehicle pile-up on the M6 in Cumbria has paid tribute to him and said he "had a smile for everyone".

Alan Walmsley, 62, died in the crash near Burton-in-Kendal on Monday. Another lorry driver, Michael Proctor, 22, was also killed.

The northbound carriageway was shut for nine hours.

The family of Mr Walmsley, of Mardale Road, Longridge, Lancashire, said he will be "sorely missed".

They added: "He had a smile for everyone and always tried to help people even if that meant he went without. He always saw the best in everyone. He will be a big loss throughout the community we are sure."

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "The exact circumstances that led to the collision are subject to a full and thorough police investigation, however, police believe that it was a large shunt that occurred while some of the vehicles were stationary in traffic."

About 25 emergency vehicles and 30 police officers attended the scene.
