'Mortal fear' driver jailed after 110mph police chase
A man who claimed he drove fast because of "mortal fear" of the car behind him - not realising it was the police - has been jailed for three years.
David Brown, a 52-year-old garage owner from Wickford, Essex, led officers on a 110mph midnight chase on the A66 past Keswick in Cumbria.
A Carlisle Crown Court jury took 10 minutes to find him guilty of dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.
It was Brown's third conviction for dangerous driving.
The jury also found him guilty of unlawfully possessing a kitchen knife which was found in the foot-well beside him.
He claimed he used it to peel apples and take stones out of his tyres.
Brown was banned from driving for three years and the judge ordered his BMW car should be confiscated.
