The search for a diver who went missing in the Lake District has been scaled back after more than 24 hours.

The man, is his 30s and from West Yorkshire, failed to surface from Wastwater on Sunday afternoon.

Other members of the group raised the alarm, and Cumbria Police's Underwater Search Team worked overnight using sonar equipment.

Wastwater is the deepest lake in England, reaching depths of almost 80m (260ft) in places.

The initial search had involved police, coastguard, fire service, mountain rescue teams and an RAF helicopter.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "As with all sports there is some kind of danger or risk involved, but at this moment in time we can't say how or why the diver has not returned to the surface."
