A man who took and crashed his former partner's car before breaking into her house has been jailed.

Thomas Young was discovered asleep in a drunken stupor in bed in the woman's Carlisle home, after he had smashed a window to gain entry.

The 38-year-old of Orton Road, Carlisle, pleaded guilty to burglary, taking a car without consent, and driving while disqualified.

He was jailed for a total of 32 months, and banned for driving for three years.

Carlisle Crown Court heard that the woman returned home from an office party, heard a mobile phone ringing upstairs, and found Young asleep.

He had earlier driven her car a short distance before crashing it into one belonging to a neighbour.
