A man has appeared in court after cannabis with a street value of £7m was seized on North Tyneside.

Dutch national Jimmy Sijm, 25, was charged with improper importation of a Class B drug and has appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.

UK Border Agency officers found 1.6 tonnes of cannabis in a lorry from Amsterdam carrying plastic bottles.

Mr Sijm was arrested on Wednesday when officers seized the drug at North Shields ferry terminal.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to reappear again before magistrates on 23 November.

The agency said The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) will now be investigating the matter.
